Publishing and Open Access

Caution, Rip-Off! How to recognize and avoid predatory journals. (DE, EN)

The Medical Library is offering workshops on open access in the English language and in German. Current dates are to be found in the calendar of events.

Aimed at: The workshop is aimed at authors and anyone interested in the publishing landscape.

Content: Predatory journals publish articles and charge publication fees without ensuring adequate quality assurance procedures (peer review). Moreover, articles in predatory journals are often not indexed in the relevant subject databases, thus remaining hidden from the community and infrequently cited. The recent report of the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) 'Combatting Predatory Academic Journals and Conferences'  reveals that more than 15,000 predatory journals exist, and the number is increasing.

The broad spectrum of behavior in predatory journals ranges from questionable and unethical to truly fraudulent practices. As methods become more sophisticated, it is increasingly difficult to identify predatory journals.

We will show you in our workshop how to spot predatory practices before submitting your manuscript.

Were / are you unsure about how reputable a particular journal is? Please bring those examples to the workshop and we will look at them together!

Workshop content:

  • Basics of quality assurance for scientific publications
  • Predatory publishing: definition, extent and consequences for all stakeholders involved
  • Procedure and tools to distinguish serious from unethical journals
  • What to do if you have submitted to a predatory journal
  • Examples and practical exercise on how to recognize predatory journals

New dates will follow from summer 2024.

  • How do I ensure that my data are also re-usable in the long term?
  • How can I consider privacy aspects?
  • How do I search for useful data sets and how do I quote them?

Speaker: Dr. Evgeny Bobrov is a consultant for open data and research data management at the QUEST Center of the Berlin Institute of Health. He advises on the provision of biomedical data and is an advocate for open data. Previously, he was a brain researcher and then a laboratory manager at the Charité, and so has first-hand knowledge of research practice, including about the obstacles that sometimes hinder data sharing.

Publishing and Open Access

Scientific Writing and Publishing online course. Nature Masterclasses (EN)

Aimed at
Online courses offered by Nature Masterclasses are open to all members of the Charité.
The course "Scientific Writing and Publishing online course" is customized for students and researchers in the natural sciences who have little publication experience as well as authors with previous knowledge, which they would like to refresh.

Contents
The online course "Scientific Writing and Publishing" consists of 3 parts and a total of 11 learning hours which assist you to become more confident in writing and publishing manuscripts. The course includes modules on writing style, optimization of title, abstract and paragraphs, as well as the presentation of data. Associated templates, such as the structured example abstract, are ideal tools for the writing process even after the course has ended.

Additionally, participants get an insight into the editorial processes of a journal. It is particularly attractive that 36 editors of the Nature Research Group deliver this online course. They share their experience and explain which elements they pay attention to when selecting manuscripts and how their decisions are made. The numerous practical examples are a further valuable resource (for example how to appeal editorial decisions and how to write appeals).

Visit the Charité Fortbildungsakademie for more information or register with your Charité e-mail address on the Nature Masterclasses platform.

Systematic Reviews

Cochrane Interactive Learning: Conducting an Intervention Review (EN)

Online introductory course on systematic reviews, from Cochrane is available campus-wide.

Systematic reviews are a critical tool to translate the exponentially growing amount of published and unpublished biomedical evidence into a transparent synthesis of knowledge for clinical practice and research.

Study programmes are increasingly drawing attention to the key elements of Systematic Reviews. The Charité Medical Library has therefore licensed the modular online course Cochrance Interactive Learning.

The Charité is now the first institution in Germany with a campus-wide access to this online course. Students (and anyone else who writes, reads, or commissions systematic reviews) have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with PICOS, systematic search, risk of bias, meta analysis, GRADE, and the entire process of systematic review via flexible self-study.

The registration process is simple. You register with your Charité e-mail address. Afterwards, you can use the product anytime and from anywhere.

First you have to register with Cochrane. Enter your name and your e-mail address. Subsequently, a link will be sent to your e-mail address where you complete the registration process.

Next go to Cochrane Interactive Learning. In Module 2, click "Register here for access". If you are in the Charité network, institutional access will be recognized. You must accept the terms and conditions and then register for free.

As a doctoral course, you can earn up to 1.5 credit points for completing the modules through the doctoral program. (More information about Cochrane Interactive Learning as a PhD course can be found on the intranet.)

AI Campus: Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (EN, DE)

Artificial Intelligence is taking on an increasingly important role in various fields of medicine. The AI Campus (German: KI-Campus), is a BMBF-funded learning platform for artificial intelligence with free online courses, videos and podcasts to strengthen AI and data skills.

From Charité, Prof. Kerstin Ritter, Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (CCM), has so far contributed to the platform with several courses. For example, her course Dr.med.KI - Basics addresses questions such as: What is AI? Why is data so important? How is AI used to better diagnose diseases like cancer? But ethical and legal questions are not neglected either: Will all doctors be replaced by robots in the future? And what potentials but also risks arise for patients through the use of AI?

In the advanced course Dr. med. AI - Clinics, Charité experts provide insights into various application fields of AI in medicine, from AI in neuroimaging, oncology and nephrology; to application scenarios of algorithms in drug development.

The target audience for the learning content on AI in medicine is both physicians and students.

Access: Visit the AI Campus for more information.
